Rush basket weaving course in the Lake District

Discover the beauty of traditional craft in this immersive one-day rush basket weaving course in the Lake District, set in peaceful woodland beside a small river. Perfect for beginners or weavers who would like to use a new material. This hands-on course introduces you to working with English rush – a fast-growing, natural material that is soft, durable, and sustainably harvested from the wild.

Learn traditional rush weaving techniques

Your day begins with a guided introduction to rush and reedmace (bulrush) that grows in our on-site ponds. You’ll learn how these native materials are harvested, dried, and stored, gaining insight into sustainable, low-impact craft practices rooted in the British countryside.

You’ll then create your own small round rush basket, learning essential weaving techniques step by step. Depending on time, you’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with rush cordage and explore a variety of traditional weave patterns.

Enjoy a full day of making in a tranquil woodland setting in the Lake District, Cumbria. The course takes place outdoors. We have a large sheltered area available among the trees in case of rain, so you can craft comfortably whatever the weather.

We will prepare a fresh, healthy lunch for you in our camp kitchen, and refreshments are available throughout the day.

General Information

DAY 0-

Facilities – We have two composting toilets and running water for hand washing.

Meals & Drinks – Lunch is included, vegetarian options are available as standard. At our Oak Howe site, highly-filtered drinking water is pumped directly from the river. Tea and coffee-making facilities are provided with biscuits, feel free to bring your own snacks.

Special Requirements – If you have any special requirements, please contact us prior to booking and we will do our best to accommodate them. Pescatarian/vegetarians are well catered for, but can vegans and those with serious food intolerances (like celiac disease) please contact us to discuss your requirements, as you may be asked to bring some specialist food to supplement your diet.

Minimum Age – 14, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Insurance – Whilst not essential, it is recommended that you have simple adventure travel insurance to cover yourself and your possessions whilst on this trip. No outdoor activity is entirely without risk, as you may be using sharp tools or walking across uneven terrain – accidents can happen.
