Woodland camping, food and sauna

Woodland camping is available at Oak Howe when booked along with a one-day course/courses. We are offering this option separately as a trial this year as some people would rather not camp, or live locally and prefer to go home for the night. For those of you who have done courses before, the full weekend will feel very similar to existing weekend-long courses from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

The options for camping are:

Friday night, 7pm – 10am with a light supper provided, usually hearty soup with bread and cheese. Simple breakfast such as cereal and eggs, along with tea and coffee, will be available for you too make yourself in our camp kitchen on the Saturday morning.

Saturday night, 5pm – 10am. After a day of crafting you will be able to relax and enjoy our hand-built, wood-fired sauna with a spring-water fed plunge pool or a cold shower (depending on time of year). We will then have the cob oven ready for you to build your own pizza with a variety of toppings, before sitting around the fire or finding your own secluded spot for the rest of the evening. Simple breakfast such as cereal and eggs, along with tea and coffee, will be available for you too make yourself in our camp kitchen on the Sunday morning.

You can book both nights to make a full weekend.

General Information

Camping places – You can choose to camp near the kitchen/social area, in the trees with other people or find a remote spot away from everyone for a much wilder camping experience.

Facilities – We have two composting toilets and running water for hand washing. The small river is lovely for a fresh splash! You will feel very clean after a sauna and plunge/shower.

Meals & Drinks – At our Oak Howe site, highly-filtered drinking water is pumped directly from the river. Tea and coffee-making facilities are provided, feel free to bring your own snacks.

Special Requirements – If you have any special requirements, please contact us prior to booking and we will do our best to accommodate them. Pescatarian / Vegetarians are well catered for, but can Vegans and those with serious food intolerances (like celiac disease) please contact us to discuss your requirements, as you may be asked to bring some specialist food to supplement your diet.

Minimum Age – 14, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Insurance – Whilst not essential, it is recommended that you have simple adventure travel insurance to cover yourself and your possessions whilst on this trip. No outdoor activity is entirely without risk, as you may be using sharp tools or walking across uneven terrain – accidents can happen.

Wild Human has very comprehensive public liability cover.

Course Location – This course in run at Oak Howe, a young woodland in the Lyth Valley, not far from Kendal. Please ensure that you have received and printed the correct arrival information!

Parking – Courses are conducted on private land, with limited access to the general public. There are parking facilities provided within the grounds, and whilst we cannot guarantee the safety of your vehicle, there have never been any incidents of theft. We would recommend that you keep any valuable personal belongings in your day sack. 

Course Cancellation – If, for any reason you wish to cancel your course, please refer to our Terms & Conditions. You will not be offered a refund for any money for late cancellation, neither will you be offered a transferral of your money to another course. Please seek appropriate insurance against late cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances!

Pre & Après Course Accommodation – If you are interested in spending some time enjoying the stunning scenery of the Lake District, either before or after your course, you can contact Windermere Tourist Information via their website.

Personal CommunicationsAll of our sites have reasonable 4G coverage. Please be discreet when using your phone so that it does not impinge on anyone else’s experience. We would encourage you to switch it off, and bring a notebook and camera to record your experience. We prefer to keep phones on silent in communal areas and avoid use sitting around the campfire and at meals as many people are keen to have a digital detox whilst they are here. 

Power & ChargingThere is a rechargeable power pack available for charging but you may need to supply your own cable. Please bring your own battery pack if you anticipate high-usage.

Pets Unfortunately pets are not allowed on any of our courses.
