FULLY BOOKED

The location for the Wild Finland Expedition is high above the Arctic Circle, in Finnish lapland, home to the indigenous people of Sápmi. We will begin the trip with a Sámi homestay, so we have a comfortable introduction to winter bushcraft and travel skills, before setting off into the forest to learn classic winter camping skills. Using skis and pulling pulkas, we can travel in comfort. By sliding our kit, instead of carrying it, we can manage to live in heated tents.

You will learn the art of forest skiing, winter navigation, building snow shelters, lighting fires, finding water, tracking mammals, catching fish, wilderness travel and arctic survival. This trip will be hosted by our friend Phil at Boreal Forest Expeditions.

The expedition will begin with a preparatory phase, run from wilderness cabins, covering all the core skills we need to hit the trail – like learning to ski, preparing food, understanding the mechanics of cold weather injury (and how to avoid them), how to safely use an axe, and lots of other essential skills.

Accommodation will be in both cabins and wood-heated canvas tents. The days will be spent skiing through stunning frozen forests and over icy lakes, learning wilderness skills, looking out for the northern lights and twinkling stars.

Under expert guidance, it is the optimal time of year where the conditions should be perfect to maximise the potential to experience deep cold, yet still have reasonable daylight hours. Physical Conditioning:

You need to be in reasonable shape. Anyone who is seriously overweight or has limited flexibility will discover some real handicaps due to so much kneeling, sitting without back support, squatting, and doing things at ground level. Attitude is everything. If you really want to be there, have the temperament to attend to fussy little details, and are a patient and eager learner, then the winter trail will be very rewarding.

Prior to the trip we recommend that you begin a light aerobic fitness-training regime, working out at least three times a week. This will greatly improve your enjoyment of the course. If you are in any doubt about your ability to cope with a cardiovascular workout program, please consult your GP.
