Description
A two-day craft workshop to learn simple loom carving and weaving techniques. Suitable for people who have some previous whittling or carving skills, although full tuition will be given.
You will start the weekend by carving traditional band looms and simple weaving shuttles like those used by the Sami people and First Nations weavers in Canada. The great thing about these techniques is that they are incredibly portable and can be used to make bands, belts, strip-cloth or bindings of any length.
You will move on to learn about selecting warp and weft threads, how to create patterns within the weave and warping the loom. You will then be able to make bands of useful and beautiful cloth to take home.
We will be based in our cosy workshop with a woodburning stove – so the course will be able to go ahead whatever the weather. The course is fully catered and there will be a pizza making session on the Saturday evening in our wood-fired cob pizza oven.
All tools will be provided but please bring your favourite sloyd/pick knives if you have any. Also, if you have small netting needles (such as those made on our Native course) they may be useful but we will create everything needed, so no problem if not.
