Description
The Axe and Mocotaugan Combo is a 4-day course aimed at taking you through the process of making these tools, in a woodland setting, using the basic kit you would carry with you on a trip. You will begin with learning how to ‘field forge’, a backwoods process that will transform an old steel file into a functional crooked-knife blade. Having created crooked-knife, you will then carve a section of ash-wood, learning the art of re-handling an axe head.
You will start by backwoods forging your own Mocotaugan or Crooked-knife. A one-handed drawknife that was the go-to tool of the Woodland Native-Americans, the canoe, sled and snowshoe makers. The Cree and Ojibwa called it the Mocotaugan, while the French-Canadian called it the “le couteau croche”, which translates directly into English as the ‘Crooked Knife’. The ability to use the knife one handed allows the other hand to hold the work piece and therefore removes the need for clamps or vices.
We first learned this skill set on a winter trip from two Master Maine Guides, Garrett Conover and Alexandra Conover-Bennett. The workshop will be led by Brian Elener, a professional carpenter who has undertaken many independent trips to the North Woods and used these skills in remote settings. The knowledge and skills that you will acquire will allow you to manufacture your own tools for a lifetime, to replace a lost blade, fix broken knives and make beautiful bespoke gifts for others.
In the words of Mors Kochanski – “You should always be one axe-handle ahead”. Being able to repair your axe in the wild is an essential and lost skill. You will create your own axe to take home with you: carve a fresh handle from seasoned ash and re-helve it tightly into a new axe head using a wooden wedge. Advanced skills and axe maintenance are also covered so you will be able to hone your blade to a razor sharp edge. You will gain a great deal of strength in your hands during this course, and possibly a few calluses, but it will feel hugely rewarding. There is also be the opportunity to craft an improvised frame saw to complete your back-woods toolkit. This course will set you firmly on the path to acquiring the time-honoured skills of Axemanship.
